Lake Providence: a town and a lake, on the Mississippi River and US Highway 65--a great locale for thriving businesses. Known as the "Gateway to Louisiana," Lake Providence is few miles south of the Arkansas state line and about 30 miles north of Interstate 20.
Agriculture is the prevalent industry, and crops include cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, milo and wheat. Commerce includes the related industries: cotton gins, grain elevators, and the Port of Lake Providence on the Mississippi River (50 miles south of Greenville and 50 miles north of Vicksburg). Delta Southern Railway Company of Tallulah provides railway service through the area, and the Byerley Airport accommodates small commercial aircraft, crop dusters, and private planes.
Lake Providence (the lake) provides recreation throughout the year for fishing, skiing, swimming, and boating, with two public boat ramps. Bass tournaments are held frequently on the lake and other sport fish include white perch, bass, bream, and catfish.
The Bayou Macon Wildlife Management Area, with 6500 acres, is located on Highway 2 west of Lake Providence, and contributes to the economic health of the region.
